Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is organised into 7 areas of learning:

Prime Areas

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Physical

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Activities and experiences are provided in an enabling environment to cover all these areas of learning, providing a broad and balanced curriculum. Most activities encompass several areas, whilst others are designed to teach specific skills.Positive relationships and role-modelling provided by experienced staff further enhance the child’s learning and development.

The continuous provision of paint (and other markers), glue, dough, sand, water, home corner, dressing up, large and small construction, small world, books, stories and rhymes etc. form the basis of this curriculum. We promote Mathematics and literacy in all areas;Numbers are everywhere and clipboards and other mark-making equipment are available throughout the setting, inside and out. Provision is further enhanced by following children’s interests, adding resources and by excellent staff making the most of the ‘teachable moments’.

Learning through play is organised as whole group, small group and individual activities. Emphasis is particularly put on the ‘Prime’ areas of development (Personal, Social and Emotional, Communication and Language and Self-esteem and self-awareness). We focus strongly on children demonstrating the characteristics of effective learning (Playing and exploring, Active learning and critical thinking) as these characteristics provide a solid foundation for future learning success.

Our philosophy is ‘learning through play’ in a happy and safe environment, to ensure the most positive outcome and transition to primary school possible for the children.
